Категория инструментальных средств и приложений, поддерживающих технологию динамического многомерного анализа данных, включая хранение, управление и манипулирование многомерными показателями, предоставление пользователям простых и удобных средств оперативного доступа к этим данным, динамического построения отчетов, графиков, формирования сложных запросов, агрегирования, прогнозирования и выполнения других аналитических действий. Для определения принадлежности продукта к категории OLAP можно использовать известные 18 правил

Класс приложений и технологий, предназначенных для сбора, хранения и анализа многомерных данных в целях поддержки принятия управленческих решений. Технология OLAP позволяет аналитикам, менеджерам и управляющим сформировать свое собственное видение данных, используя быстрый, единообразный, оперативный доступ к разнообразным формам представления информации.[http://www.kmtec.ru].

- оперативная обработка транзакций (OLTP - Online Transaction Processing) и
- системы поддержки принятия решений (DSS - Decision Support System).
OLTP-системы используются для создания приложений, поддерживающих ежедневную активность организации. Обычно это критические для деятельности приложения, требующие быстроты отклика и жесткого контроля над безопасностью и целостностью данных.
DSS, как правило, крупнее, чем OLTP-системы. Обычно они используются с целью анализа данных и выдачи отчетов и рекомендаций. Пользователи должны иметь возможность конструировать запросы различной сложности, осуществлять поиск зависимостей, выводить данные на графики и использовать информацию в других приложениях типа электронных таблиц, текстовых процессорах и статистических пакетов.
